For short texts, you just jam the keys as fast as you can (the same strategy as typing the alphabet), and hope to be lucky and not make any errors. The language of the text is not very important.
No doubt 185 required a lot of luck, but I'm sure if Jelani jammed at the keys a little bit longer he could probably hit 190. He's a much better typer than I am on real texts, as you can see from his intersteno exercises.

Just curious, what technique do you use for typing; do you type with 9 fingers and, if so, which thumb do you use for the space bar? Part of the reason I am not a faster typer is because I use the left hand to type the spacebar. Unfortunately in QWERTY the left hand does a lot more work than the right hand, so the spacebar is an extra burden.
I type with 8 fingers plus the left thumb for the spacebar. If I am typing on a real keyboard I type like a pianist. If I am typing on a laptop I rest my wrists on the desk. Of course I prefer to type on a real keyboard but do not always have this luxury...

Interesting. Do you find this makes you faster, or do you just feel more comfortable like this? I always have my wrists on the desk, but I haven't experimented with other positions, so I don't know whether I'm being suboptimal. Also, what kind of keyboard do you use? I use "Microsoft Basic Keyboard 1.0A", which is just some standard keyboard that came with my computer, but I wonder whether there are better options. Well right now I am typing on my laptop (thinkpad t60p) with my wrists resting on the laptop. I am right-handed. I'm not sure why I became a lefty spacebar typist but that's the way I learned it since I was little and it is more or less impossible to change it without a negative impact on my speed now.

It's a classic keyboard with an excellent mechanical buckling spring action, much better than the cheap dome-switches that are standard these days. When I type on this keyboard, my wrists hang in the air. I'm not sure if it improves my speed substantially, but certainly it keeps my speed high for a much longer period of time because my forearms do not get tired as easily. Last year when I did intersteno I had to type the entire competition on my laptop... needless to say I put myself at risk for carpal tunnel there.

That's funny, I had typed a post where I was asking the exact same questions as Minilek, but he was faster than me (of course!).
Oh by the way Minilek, when Daniel says he was putting himself at risk for carpal tunel, it's not just for 10 minutes of typing as you did in practice mode (rest assured). He had typed every language at the 2008 competition, that means 15 times 10 minutes, which is obviously a whole lot of typing at maximum speed. I assume this was over a couple days though.
Dan, I was contemplating buying that very keyboard... What scares me though is the noise aspect. I have read it was VERY noisy and since I share the room with other people it puts me off a little bit. I was also hesitating with the Das Keyboard advertised on typeracer which seems like a good keyboard too. You would not happen to have tried it, would you?
