Pointing for 2011.

by Zoran
I write this to all typists and especially to the creator of the site Jeandid.
I think (and many others I believe) the current system of pointing is not good for many of us. In this case it's not the thing about me. My 5th or 6th place is always secured no matter what happens but I'm talking about typists who type really often and they NEVER GOT A SINGLE POINT! Jeandid, tell me is that ok with you?
Let us propose the systems of pointing and then we'll vote for it and in the 2011. the choosen system will be the next one. My recommended system is the proportional one. If the Winner has 100 wpm he gets 100 points, if the second one has 99 wpm he gets 99 points, 3th 85 wpm he gets 85 points etc... In this case ALL THE TYPISTS will get at least 1 point. No one likes to be ZEROS all year long. Maybe this system is not the best but it's definitely better than the current one.
If the system of pointing stays the same, many of us will not type anymore, and you should be sure about that!

I'm probably not entering in 2011 unless there's a new points system or Kukkain is not entering, since I'll have literally no way to win on that logarithmic scale, even if I win all 8 medium/long masters, because it's easier to win by a large amount on a short master than a medium/long master.
But I have several suggestions as well, and Zoran and I have discussed on Facebook.
My preference is for a system where the same position scores the same number of points, as TypingZone used to work in its early years, for instance:
1. 200
2. 160
3. 130
4. 115
5. 100
6. 90
7. 80
8. 70
9. 60
10. 50
11. 45
12. 40
13. 35
14. 30
15. 25
16. 22
17. 19
18. 16
19. 13
20. 10
21. 8
22. 6
23. 4
24. 2
25. 1
Another possibility to allow more people to score points would be awarding points like this, with much smaller gaps between top positions:
1. 100
2. 90
3. 85
4. 80
5. 75
6. 70
7. 65
8. 60
9. 55
10. 50
11. 48
12. 46
13. 44
14. 42
15. 40
16. 38
17. 36
18. 34
19. 32
20. 31
21. 30
22. 29
23. 28
24. 27
25. 26
26. 25
27. 24
28. 23
29. 22
30. 21
31. 20
32. 19
33. 18
34. 17
35. 16
36. 15
37. 14
38. 13
39. 12
40. 11
41. 10
42. 9
43. 8
44. 7
45. 6
46. 5
47. 4
48. 3
49. 2
50. 1
Even more simple solutions that Zoran and I discussed were simply to give the winner a number of points equivalent to the number of participants in that master, with 1 point going to whoever finishes last, or 100 points to the winner, with each subsequent player scoring 101-n where n is the number of participants in the master.
My preferred points system is the one I bolded.

A new system could be helpful for the slow typists, We don't wanna see them give up. Remain to find out which one is the best

Sean,it has become very hard for you to win the championship against Kukkain.
The only way to beat Kukkain on championship is to beat him more harder on long masters than he beats you on shorts,but Kukkain has improved in long masters,too,now,and even if you want to beat him big time you can't.He is the greatest typer of short texts in the world of typing sites,and now he has improved so that you can't beat him with a large difference of speed on long texts.I don't think he will participate in the next championship,just from time to time.
No offence Sean,you shouldn't be upset on me,but this is the way I think and it's quite fair.
About the changing of the point system,I agree with Sean's bolded system,although this would mean that the future users will be privileged,cause they will earn their points more easily then the past ones.Also I think that it would attract more people if the system of pointing would be changed.All we have to do is to vote(30-50 people that participate often in masters)and if Jeandid agrees,too, we could do it.

Here's my suggestion for a new formula: (say "thanks", Mr Wrona !)
For each player:
Month 1:
The chosen text has length1 (number of characters)
score1 = (score1_based_on_speed) x length1
.....
Month 12:
The chosen text has length12 (number of characters)
score12 = (score12_based_on_speed) x length12
Overall: score = score1 + score2 + .... + score12.
This way, the number of earned points will also depend on text length, meaning that longer texts weigh more in the balance than short texts.
My formula works with ANY way of computing score_based_on_speed.

Thanks, Mr. Wrona (Airplane! "don't call me Shirley"-styled humor, forgive me).
I still like my idea better but Andrei's is definitely worth considering, so thanks for the idea.

Surely/Shirley .... heh, good one (thank God I wasn't born deaf).
Let aside the fact that many people prefer short texts, my idea has yet another drawback: the resulting figures are plain UGLY
Let's see an example using the current pointing system:
October 2010: length10 = 109 chars.
score10_SeanWrona = 109 x 53 = 5777
score10_GuilhermeS = 109 x100 = 10900
December 2010: length12 = 409 chars.
score12_SeanWrona = 409 x 100 = 40900
score12_GuilhermeS = 409 x 98 = 40082
Considering only these 2 months:
score_SeanWrona = 40900 + 5777 = 46677 -- (current score: 153)
score_GuilhermeS = 40082 + 10900 = 50982 -- (current score: 198)
Ratio: 46677 / 50982 =
0.916 -- (current ratio: 153 / 198 =
0.723)
So, as you can see, micrometrically winning long masters is still naive against the Guilherme powerhouse, but it can help close the gap.

There are few chances for Kukkain to participate next year,again. The only chance for Wrona is to learn to type the short texts as good as Kukkain...Or atleast shorten the gap...
Kukkain has become invincible,cause he now types the long texts close to Wrona,besides kicking asses at short texts like no other.
Anyway, I hope next year we will see another podium,with Andrei, Bayatu and Sean.

Bulga,
I take this opportunity to make an announcement: the odds are currently against my constant participation in next year's tournament. In plain English: I don't think I will be able to play seriously next year. Reasons are many: lack of time, bad logistics (QWERTY are scarce on French soil) , shaky motivation etc.
So for those who have already placed a huge bet on me --> folks, get ready for a house mortgage!! For those who haven't yet --> try Bayatu on for size, he's my successor (maybe).
Actually, this message isn't for Bulga only, as you might have noticed

I thought you'd think that way as you get older

(in terms of typing) It is true that you have to jogle real life also

But considering kukkain will not participate again(I think) and maybe Sean will not, you could surely win the championship,as you are better than him on english more than he is on french( the same situation as kukkain and sean).
So,you could win the championship if those 2 will not participate every master, so it would be a pitty to " destroy " your chances of winning another champ by retiring now

Anyway,you will do what you will think it is right:D You will move in France ? If you move in France you won't be able to type anything else than azerty ? Happy new year!
